‘’I wanted to find a balance between my organic textures and the history of the old cut diamonds, to create something that references the ancient, but is eminently modern.’’
The collection celebrates the imperfect beauty of old cut diamonds – unique stones from the 1800 & 1900s, that have already lived a life as antique jewellery, now reset in Ellis’ signature erosive aesthetic.
‘’The idea of contrast is something I wanted to encapsulate in these rings. Rugged textures with classically beautiful diamonds; rough and smooth, order and chaos. ‘’
Old Cut Diamonds | The term 'old cut diamond' refers to antique diamonds cut without the precision of modern cut diamonds.Other descriptions include 'Old Mine Cut' and 'Victorian Cut. Before modern advancements in diamond cutting in the 1800s, diamonds were cut by hand by craftsmen; the positioning of facets were less structured and unique. In comparison, more modern cuts have a far more ordered, geometric appearance. It is this hand-created, organic aesthetic that gives old cut diamonds their unique identities.
